President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017

Aloha Rotarians and Friends:

Welcome to the final month of my term as president of the Rotary E-Club of Hawaii. As I start looking back on the things we did together, I can't wait to share my list of the accomplishments and achievements for our Club in the past year.  And that's why our Club Vision Session coming up this Saturday is so important - we want to hear from our fellow members on what they want to do next year during President-Elect Courtlin Holt-Nguyen's term and in the years beyond. This is your Club and your opportunity to help determine priorities and projects for the future.

The full flyer for the Club Vision Session was emailed to all members, with info also available at http://www.rotaryeclubhawaii.org/our-meetings/meeting-serving-with-rotary-brings-joy-to-my-life-may-17-to-may-23-2017.  One slight change, we are making it a potluck, so when you RSVP to President-Elect Nominee Randy Soriano, please indicate the dish you will bring to share. Looking forward to seeing as many of our members as possible and discussing the direction of our Club.

President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017

Aloha Rotarians and Friends:

Congratulations! At the recently held District Conference on Maui, our Club was recognized for having the highest per capita giving to The Rotary Foundation of all small clubs (<25 members) in our District. This is a great honor and recognizes that our Club is small, but mighty, and also still growing. Many thanks go out to all of our generous members who have donated at least $1 to TRF in the past Rotary Year. I also want to give a special shout-out to Assistant Governor Ray Paler for his leadership as our Foundation Chair for our Club. for leading by example with his own personal giving, and for encouraging all of us to donate to TRF.

Beyond the honors and supporting Rotary projects worldwide, remember that 50% of our donations come back to our Club in 3 years as District Designated Funds (DDF) to use for approved projects. Currently, we use this funding to pay for our Dictionary Project. As our giving increases, so does our DDF coming back to our Club, we can take on additional projects that require funding, so this is very good news indeed.

Speaking of projects, if you've got ideas or requests, remember our Club Vision Session on Saturday, June 3 will help provide direction for our Club in the next year and beyond. Please read on for RSVP information. And finally, we still have room for the Taste of Hawaii event on Kauai on Sunday, June 4. Please email me rotary@capsun.org ASAP as we will be finalizing our travel plans by the end of this week.

President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017

Aloha Rotarians and Friends:

We are going to be busy in my last few weeks as President. I'll have more updates next week, but wanted to highlight two activities that we need your participation and help to succeed.
Picture
First, we will hold a Club Vision Session on Saturday, June 3, 2017, from 10 am - 2 pm, at the home of Rotarian Susan Szabo.  Address details will be emailed to all members. This is meant to serve as an opportunity to gather informally to discuss the future of our Club and what projects/activities we want to focus on during President-Elect Courtlin Holt-Nguyen's term that begins on July 1. RSVP to President-Elect Nominee Randy Soriano on or before Friday, June 2, 2017.

Second, the very next day, Sunday, June 4, 2017, the annual Taste of Hawaii event will take place on Kauai, headed by the Rotary Club of Kapaa, with the participation and assistance of all Kauai Rotary Clubs and several others. Last year, our Club had a total volunteer crew of five who assisted with logistics and moving supplies around. It was labor-intensive work and also quite enjoyable. This also ended up being our largest fundraiser for the year as all Clubs who assist are given a share of the proceeds. This year. If you are interested in participating, please email me at rotary@capsun.org on or before Sunday, May 22, 2017 so that I can coordinate with Assistant Governor Ray Paler. The Board has approved some funds to offset the costs of flying over, but please note that depending on the number of members participating and the cost of flights, this may not be enough to cover all of your expenses.

I hope all of you who are able to attend will join us at the Club Vision Session and that anyone interested will be able to help with the Taste of Hawaii event.

Meeting: Three Ways to Plan for the (Very) Long Term (May 10 to May 16, 2017)

President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017

Aloha Rotarians and Friends:

As I write this, I am finishing a one week visit to the Bay Area. That got me thinking about the PETS training that I attended last year and the PETS training that I supported this year, both in San Jose. Traveling with and meeting other Rotarians is one of the greatest joys and opportunities to connect with others. I hope you'll take advantage if you are able to. It doesn't have to be at PETS. It can be at a District Conference (our Hawaii District Conference is on Maui next week). Or it could even be at our Rotary International Convention; I've been told up to 50 Hawaii Rotarians normally travel to the International Convention. This year's convention will be held in June in Atlanta, Georgia; 2018 will be in Toronto, Canada; 2019 will be in Hamburg, Germany; and 2020 will be in our own back yards here in Honolulu. Although I have yet to attend an International Convention, it's always good to start planning. So who else is interested?

President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017

Aloha Rotarians and Friends:

As today is the beginning of May, it means my term as your Club President is in its final two months. Before I started my term, my goal was and continues to be to have our Rotary E-Club of Hawaii add value to your lives. For some, that is professional contacts. For others, that is service projects. And for many, it's the many friends we make in our Club and throughout the Rotary world.

One small way we like to add value is the list of Our Members under the About tab on our website. If you haven't seen it or haven't looked at it for a while, please give it a look. For our existing members, if you want anything updated (your photo, classification, etc.) please email me at rotary@capsun.org. For our new members, we would LOVE to have your photo and information up as soon as possible. Please email me with a photo (square preferred), classification, and what website URL you would like your link forwarded to (for when people click on your photo to see info).

Finally, I really appreciate this week's video about Shelter Box, which is deployed around the world by Rotarians. I've seen this set up and it's amazing how large and how much help can fit in one box.
