President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017![]() Aloha Rotarians and Friends: As you know, the big thing going on for Rotary E-Club of Hawaii this week is our annual visit from the District Governor, which I wrote about last week. DG Clint Schroeder always brings such great wisdom, energy, and inspiration to his talks and meetings, so it's a great opportunity to hear him if you haven't. I continue to be impressed by how Rotary makes the world a smaller place. Just in the past week, I've met or heard from Rotarians from several different countries, who speak several languages, and one who retired to Hawaii after living and working throughout Asia. In fact, on my recent trip to Philadelphia, I was a little disappointed that I didn't plan enough time to make it to a Rotary Club. And then on my last full day, I happened to bump into PP Alicia Dupree of RC of Kapolei Sunset. A Philly native, she was visiting her family, pictured above. I haven't seen her in months, but we both travelled 5,000 miles to bump into each other. Like I said, Rotary does make our world a smaller place. After the link, we've got a great post on "Elect to Be Civil" - a great title to a great post. Yes, I like the wordplay, too. Finally, we've got two big District 5000 initiatives I want to call you attention to, if you haven't seen it already. First is the Potential Rotary Leaders Seminar (PRLS) course on October 29, from 7:45 am - 3:30 pm. There is a nominal fee, but it does include meals. I attended this event several years ago and it is what first got me on the track to becoming our Club President. Second, is our 2017 District Conference that will be held on Maui. There's just about six weeks left for early bird registration, which saves you a lot of money. Don't worry, I have yet to register myself, but want you all to have the info to take advantage of early bird pricing. Mahalo! Remember to click Read More below to view the rest of our meeting. President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017![]() Aloha Rotarians and Friends: It's here! One of the most important days of the Rotary Year is here, our official District Governor Visit. Our very own D5000 District Governor Clint Schroeder (pictured) has been visiting with the 50 Clubs in our District and our turn is coming up next week Wednesday, September 28, at 11:30 am, at the OHA Conference Rooms at 560 North Nimitz Hwy. A sandwich lunch will be served. This is our opportunity to hear some updates from DG Clint and also for him to help support our Club as he hears about our goals. Finally, we will be doing some recognitions of members, including a Polio Champion, Paul Harris Fellow, and new member induction. If you are joining us, please arrive before 11:30 as we plan to start right on time at 11:30. You can also read DG Clint's bio below to learn more about his professional work as well as his passionate commitment to Rotary and this year's theme of Rotary Serving Humanity. There's a lot going on in our Club and throughout our District, so read below for some great Foundation updates from AG Ray Paler and remember that our TRF contributions and District Designated Funds pay for our Dictionary Project. There is also information about service opportunities for this Saturday. Mahalo! Remember to click Read More below to view the rest of our meeting. Meeting: Polio Survivor's Fight to Live a Normal Life (September 14th to September 20th, 2016)9/14/2016 President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017![]() Aloha Rotarians and Friends: Greetings from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania! I'm here for a week, but still had time to do our meeting. That's just one of the benefits of being a member of the Rotary E-Club of Hawaii. Several of us from Rotary E-Club of Hawaii, Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset, Rotary Club of Kapolei Sunset, Rotary Club of Honolulu Pau Hana, and Rotary Club of Kahala Sunrise joined together for food and friendship at Bellows on Saturday. We got to enjoy some of the special recipe bratwursts prepared by Glenn and Mary Sears. It's always a good time, so if we missed you this time, I hope we'll see you again in the future. Many of the other Rotary Clubs in District 5000 are planning multi-club events to give us an opportunity to gather with each other. Great news! Two of our members have been busy carrying out our Rotary Serving Humanity theme this year. First, Carol Fetzer our Community Service Chair, who coordinates our Dictionary Project has two dates down for our Dictionary Project distribution at Kaaawa, Laie, Hauula, and Kahuku Elementary Schools. Please mark October 19 and 20 down, most likely in the morning, but possibly also in the afternoon. We are still finalizing the exact times with the schools. This is my favorite project we do as a Club and I encourage you to participate if you haven't already. Another busy member is Randy Soriano, who is working on a blood drive. Check it out in our member's updates section after the Read More link. Finally, the Rotary Clubs of Hawaii Kai and Kaneohe are partnering on a Ducky Dash project to raise money for college scholarships. We are trying to get a couple members from our Club to attend and participate. More details are in the D5000 updates section after the Read More link. Mahalo! Meeting: Making Peace, One Exchange Student at a Time (September 7th to September 13th, 2016)9/7/2016 President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017![]() Aloha Rotarians and Friends: Maybe you have a similar observation. The more and more I look at my social calendar, the more I am hanging out with friends I know through Rotary and participating in Rotary events. It has increased since I first joined Rotary in February 2013 and grew exponentially during my year as President-Elect. When I talk to longtime Rotarians, I often hear from them that as the years go by, more and more of their friends are people they met through Rotary. They're not just Rotary friends, they are friends period. I reflected on that as I joined John Strandberg (PE at RC of East Honolulu), a friend I met through Rotary, as we celebrated his birthday earlier this week. There were a lot of Rotarians present, but also some friends I haven't seen in a long time. It's just more evidence of how Rotary brings good people together, this time to have fun, but often to make a difference in our own communities. I'm only a quarter of the way through my year as President and it's already the busiest and best experience so far in Rotary. One main reason for that is the new friends being made and nurturing existing friendships. I am inspired by YOU, my fellow Rotarians and friends by the work you are doing to carry out Rotary Serving Humanity this year and always. Just read on to see an awesome opportunity from RECH member Tippi Cogen. And soon I hope to announce the dates for our Dictionary Project with North Shore schools. FYI, it's my favorite project we do as a Club. Mahalo! Remember to click Read More below to view the rest of our meeting. |
