President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017

Aloha Rotarians and Friends:

Last week was a busy week for Rotary E-Club of Hawaii as we held our Dictionary Project distribution to
over 200 third graders at Kahuku, Kaaawa, Laie, and Hauula Elementary Schools over two days on Oahu's beautiful North Shore. This is the only event that we do throughout the year that is funded, coordinated, and staffed entirely by our Club. This event was another success (our third year!) and it would not be possible without everyone's help and support:
  • Carol Fetzer for coordinating the donation schedule with each of the schools every year
  • Garry Yee for submitting our order for the dictionaries and labels
  • Laine Kohama and Randy Soriano for doing Wednesday's distribution
  • Tippi Cogen for joining Carol at Thursday's distribution
  • Donors to The Rotary Foundation because donations to TRF come back to our Club and all of the matching funds go to support the Dictionary Project
  • All of our members because a portion of your dues goes to support the Dictionary Project
There are some photos below and there's also a video which was shared on our Facebook page. Great job everyone!
This is a last call for PRLS (Potential Rotary Leaders Seminar), happening this Saturday for Oahu Rotarians, but you still have time to sign-up for this event geared toward new members and members who may be interested in being a Club or District leader. You can register here ($35 fee)

If you aren't attending PRLS, we'd love to see you at the Rotary Connecting for Good event at the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii's Hale Pono Ewa Beach Clubhouse instead. (Details after clicking Read More).

Have an awesome week everyone! Mahalo!

President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017

Aloha Rotarians and Friends:

Some congratulations are in order and they go to all of the members and leaders of the Rotary E-Club of Hawaii. PDG Del Green recently informed me that our Club received some belated recognition from Rotary International:
  • First, we achieved the highest retention rate over the past 3 years in District 5000.
  • Second, we achieved the highest growth rate in District 5000 for the year.
These Membership Development Awards were awarded for the 2015-2016 Rotary Year, so congratulations again and let's keep up the awesome efforts to promote member engagement and success.

Here is some of what you'll find in this week's meeting:
  • PP Garry Yee is heading up our annual Very Merry Event Fundraiser with Kahala Mall. You can help by accepting tickets to sell for only $5 that give holders discounts and a chance at a great grand prize.
  • This is also a last call for anyone interested in participating in RC of Kaneohe's Octoberfest vocational event happening on Tuesday, October 25.
  • PRLS (Potential Rotary Leaders Seminar) is in just 10 days, but you still have time to sign-up for this event geared toward new members and members who may be interested in being a Club or District leader. You can register here ($35 fee)

Have an awesome week everyone! Mahalo!

President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017

Aloha Rotarians and Friends:

Our Club's big service project, our Dictionary Project is here! For the third year in a row, we will be distributing dictionaries to over 200 third graders at Kahuku, Kaaawa, Laie, and Hauula Elementary Schools on Oahu's beautiful North Shore on Wednesday, October 19 and Thursday, October 20. And we want to have as many members as possible participate, especially new members who may not have had a chance to share this gift with a student.

The photos below are from last year's Dictionary Project at Hauula and Kaawa Elementary Schools.
We need YOU to make this project a success! The event is  pretty straightforward and will leave you on a high after experiencing all the enthusiasm of third graders, many of whom are receiving the first book that is entirely their own. Rotary E-Club of Hawaii members show up at the school, introduce ourselves, share a little about Rotary, gift each student a dictionary, and then spend a few minutes having fun going through words and facts found in the dictionary.

Here's the schedule:
Wednesday, October 19:
  • Kahuku Elementary: 10:00-10:50 am
55 students with Mr. Lee's class
  • Kaaawa Elementary: 11:45 am-12:30 pm
25 students with Ms. Ana's class

Thursday, October 20:
  • Laie Elementary, Session 1: 9:45-10:30 am
50 students with Mrs. Hontanosas and Ms. Christensen's classes
  • Laie Elementary, Session 2: 10:30-11:15 am
50 students with Mrs. Ah You and Mrs. Tweller's classes
  • Hauula Elementary: 12:45 pm
    40 students

If you are interested and available, please email me at rotary@capsun.org so that we can schedule you in. The most help is needed on Thursday, due to the larger number of students and some members being unavailable.

Mahalo to Carol Fetzer who has built our contacts with the schools and coordinated the dates and times.

Also, PP Laine Kohama still needs help with Rotary Connecting for Good, so please look for that below.

Have an awesome week everyone! Mahalo!

Meeting: District Governor Clint Schroeder's Rotary Talk (October 5-11, 2016)

President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017

Aloha Rotarians and Friends:

Congratulations and Mahalo go out to the 18 people who attended our District Governor's visit. This was done at the same time as our standard Board meeting. Part of this success was having a visiting Rotarian (Kaili Honbo, RC of East Honolulu) as well as several guests and potential Rotarians. I remarked then that it was our best attended in person meeting since our launch party back in 2013. Great job!
The following awards and recognitions were presented:
  • 2015-2016 Spirit Award:  Kama Hopkins
  • New Member Induction: Albert Mossman
  • Paul Harris Fellow: Garry Yee, Capsun Poe
  • Multiple Paul Harris Fellow: Laine Kohama (PHF+1)
  • Polio Champion: Ray Paler (Gold), Laine Kohama (Silver)

Thank you to all of you for your support of our Club and of Rotary's efforts in our community.

Our speaker this week is our very own District Governor Clint Schroeder, who visited our Board meeting last week. He gave us highlights from the full speech below. And we also have information on a Rotary Connecting for Good event on Saturday, October 29 being led by two of our members. If you have availability on Tuesday, October 25, please join me at RC of Kaneohe's meeting at Windward Community College. Also if you haven't attended one yet or if you see yourself as a Club leader one day, please consider attending Potential Rotary Leaders Seminar (PRLS) on Saturday, October 29. More info on all of these events is below after
Read More.

Finally, our Dictionary Project is scheduled for Wednesday, October 19 and Thursday, October 20, in the morning with our four North Shore elementary schools. We will get more information out when things are confirmed. In the meantime, we have received the dictionary order and will arrange a "party" for us to put labels on the dictionaries. You will probably hear from me via email regarding that.

Have an awesome week everyone! Mahalo!
