President's Message - Capsun M. Poe, President 2016-2017

Picture
Aloha Rotarians and Friends:

Welcome to this week's meeting.

We we are an E-Club after all...
"First up, for Pokemon Go players, the Pokestop is near the waterfall at the front of the building, but it should be close enough to this room to show up on your iOS or Android device." Those were the memorable words I used to open my first Board meeting of the Rotary Year. A little proof that our Club both likes to have fun AND be on top of tech trends. And yes, there was even a short Pokemon Go training session for the newest players.

I plan to make most announcements and updates on our website as part of our weekly meetings. I plan to use mass emails to the Club only for Board meetings and membership votes. My purpose is twofold: first I get too many emails to read and respond to all every day; and second, I think by putting everything on our website, it encourages others to look there, plus it contributes to activity on our website. If any of my fellow members would like something listed on our website as part of one of our weekly meetings, please feel free to reach out to me so that we can include that.

District Governor Citation
Our Club has received the District Governor Citation for the past two years, under PP Garry and PP Laine. I hope we can work together to achieve the same thing this year. The importance of the Citation lies not in adding checkmarks and getting a patch, although we do get one if we achieve it. Rather, it is a guide to maintaining an engaged, active, healthy, and vibrant Club.

Mahalo!

Sandi Mabry’s membership application received unanimous votes for Yes. President Capsun contacted her about her membership in the Rotary E-Club of Hawaii. We will send her an invoice shortly. Sandi was sponsored for membership by AG Ray Paler.

Here are just a few highlights from Sandi's Rotary resume:
-She was a charter member of the Linden Rotary Club , started in 2005. It is now called the Rotary Club of Warren County, and is part of District 7570.
-She is a Sustaining Member, Paul Harris Fellow, Benefactor and Major Donor.
-She served on the Membership and Service Committees, and as past chair of her previous District’s Alumni of the Foundation Committee and a member of the District GSE committee.
-In 2011, her Rotarian spouse Ron, was chosen to be the District Governor for 7570 in 2013-2014, and they began a wonderful 3 years traveling their District, visiting clubs, and training for the position. -They have also served as aides on the Zone level to two Rotary International Directors.
-She has served as Sergeant at Arms at the Rotary International Convention in Australia, and will be a volunteer in the same capacity in Atlanta Georgia in 2017.

Passing of Former Rotary D5000 "First Dude" Kirk Matthews

As many are already aware, local newscaster Kirk Matthews passed away this week. What you may not know is his wife is PDG Linda Coble, so Kirk served as "First Dude" during her year as District Governor.

DG Clint Schroeder just sent out the following appeal to honor Kirk Matthews as a Polio Champion:
I was in Hawaii Kai yesterday evening conducting my Club Visit, and their Board of Directors made a contribution of $200 to the Polio Champion Challenge in Kirk Matthews name...  To be presented to PDG Linda Coble (Mrs. Matthews) at the August 23rd DG Visit at RC of Honolulu.

It got me thinking...  Would any of you (or your clubs) like to match their contribution to make Kirk a Silver or Gold Level Polio Champion?  It would be a very nice way to recognize Kirk and Linda for their contributions to Rotary in Hawaii - and ensure that the work of End Polio Now continues until every last Polio bed is empty.

How it works:  If you personally pledge an amount to Polio Plus/End Polio Now you will personally get Foundation/Giving PH credit for the donation.  Just let me know that you are giving it in Kirk's name, and I will credit that dollar amount to Kirk's Champion total.  If your club would like to contribute, please treat it the same way.  Make the donation, and let me know it was for Kirk's award.

If you are interested, please send me a private message, and I will add your name to the list and presentation.

Again, thank you for the work that you do.  Your kindness and thoughtfulness never ceases to amaze me.
