PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - Laine Kohama, President 2015-2016
Aloha Rotary E-Club members and fellow Rotarians!
Aloha All! Just got back from PETS with Capsun and Ray. I’ll report back the next week about PETS as I had a blast. We have such great representation by our club with Capsun as our PE, Ray as Clint’s AG, and I’m the SAA for the district. Way to go E-Club of Hawaii : ) Everyone is doing such a fabulous job.
Continuing on from last week and Pre PETS. On Sunday it was an early start to our day. I was up before 6:00 am and saw that Clint was already up and dressed to impress. You go our fearless leader. Being the SAA with Joanne and Marietta we had to round up the troops to come on in. The PEs were good and we only started a few minutes late. Mahalo to Yolette and Gloria for providing all the snacks on Sunday. Capsun even picked up some snow puffies (I was actually thinking about them), and had one for me. Mahalo Capsun! Also Gloria made all those yummy chocolate chip cookies too.
Clint started by giving all the PEs an overview of the Goals and strategies as President which was excellent. Jason spoke about the branding strategies for Rotary. Then it was off to a quick breakfast and back to hear PDG Phil Sammer speak about the Foundation. Before Phil talked about the Foundation, our very own Ray Paler got an award from the Foundation Ray became a bequest member. What is a bequest society member? When you give $10,000 or more via your estate plans. Bequest Society members are recognized with an engraved crystal recognition piece and a Bequest Society pin. Every time I hear Phil or someone speak about the Foundation I learn something new. Also, Ray got 10 times Paul Harris which means he’s donated over $10,000. Mahalo Ray for your generous contribution to the Rotary Foundation and our club. We so appreciate your hard work and dedication.
Naomi Masuno presented the budget for D5000 and it was approved. Clint than spoke about what to expect as President. PDG Ayman El-Dakhakhni talked about how to how to attract, retain, and engage new members. Ayman always does an excellent job. I’ve been to his New Focus session last year and 2 multi club meeting with him speaking. He always does an excellent job. My fellow SAA Joanna Laird discussed what to expect at PETS with Clint. Joanne spoke to me last year when I was a PE and it was very, very helpful.
Clint closed Pre PETS and the day was done. I’m excited for all the PEs this year. They are going to do an excellent job. My job is to give Capsun all the support he needs to be a success as President of our club. Mahalo Capsun for stepping up and being the President. Mahalo Courtlin for being president the year after that. You guys know I’m available anytime you need my help.
I’ve got a lot to report next week about PETS. While there at San Francisco and San Jose I got to visit some friends too which is alway so fun to do. Don’t forget about Menehune Mac Tour on March 19th and we have an online meeting with our Twin club from France the E-Club of Francophone. I’ll leave you with this quote which is, “If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far go together” - African Proverb. I choose this quote as I feel this is one of the things I’m hoping all the PEs do together which is to go together as Presidents and lean on each other. With there combined help, they can all succeed and do great things together. Very excited for Capsun and his year as President.

Speaker: Paul Harris on What Rotary Will Be in 100 Years
By: Rotary Heritage Communications Staff, see: blog.rotary.org
“May our happiness increase with our usefulness. What Rotary will be one hundred years hence, none living can imagine.”
Rotary founder Paul Harris was a semi-regular contributor to The Rotarian magazine, and the February issue often included an anniversary message from him.
In 1915, he wrote, “We are passing our tenth milestone now. May our happiness increase with our usefulness. What Rotary will be one hundred years hence, none living can imagine. There is nothing impossible to Rotary now.”
Harris noted that Rotary had demonstrated its ability to “contribute toward the world’s supply of happiness” in terms of promoting ethical business practices within vocations. He felt that same idea would extend beyond the walls of the offices and shops, and imagined Rotary as “the harbinger of a general world-wide philosophy of business and of life, with happiness as its goal.”
While conceding that he couldn’t see into the future, Harris did predict that Rotary would become increasingly necessary for its ability to make the impossible happen.
On its tenth anniversary, Rotary had been an international organization for almost three years. There were 141 clubs in only a few countries. Today, there are more than 35,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographic areas.

Feed and Assist the Homeless Project
The project entails us feeding the homeless at the River of Life mission where we either do the following jobs:
a. Prepping in the back to get the food plated up on to be served (I did this the last time)
b. Serving meals and filling water (Garry did this this the last time)
c. Getting donation clothes sorted.
They are also requesting if we have any brand new mens white underwear, white socks, or white t-shirts. What River of Life does is offer them a free hot shower and new underwear, socks, and T-Shirt so they feel good and what they told me it makes them feel better and keeps their sense of dignity.
If you have any we can bring it when we do the project. Here are the following dates we are looking at (we are going to pick one)
DATES: March 11, 18, or 25th
TIME: 12:30 - 3:30 pm
Men: No tank tops, shirt, and covered shoes
Women: Long jeans or Caprese, no T-shirts or tank tops, covered shoes
All contributions support our service projects and ability to provide programs. Please consider making a donation today.
Donations large and small are appreciated.
