Rotary E-Club of Hawaii Presents Dictionaries to Kahuku and Hau'ula Elementary Schools by Laine Kohama (October 2015)
This week was our dictionary project that was headed up by our Community Services Chair Carol Fetzer. Last year we had one school, and with Carol’s effort we now have 3 more schools. Carol did a fantastic job working with the schools and making this project a huge success. Mahalo to Garry who ordered the dictionaries for all the schools. Mahalo to Glenn and his wife Mary received the dictionaries at his home and with the help of Glenn, Mary, Garry, and Linda Low, they were able to put all the labels in our dictionaries. Another mahalo to Capsun and Courtlin for their help on opening our clubs Grant account so we could get funding from district for the dictionary project. From there I’ve had my awesome co-worker Joe pickup and deliver the dictionaries to Garry.
Please see Garry's post that explained the project great. Please check out his pictures and write-up. It is great and sums up what a wonderful project this is. You would think why would kids like dictionaries, but when you see the appreciation, happiness, and sparkle in these wonderful 3rd graders, you know it was worth it. Last year a few second graders were given dictionaries and this student named Lulu who is now 3rd grade let me know that she loves her dictionary and carries it everyday to school in her bag. I mean that was awesome. The one thing that was fun is having the kids read the 4 way test and lookup the words in the test. It helped them understand the ideals of Rotary : )
